are you a Post Materialist?

I just ran across a term that I liked...

THE POST MATERIALIST!

it's a person that spends their money on experiences rather than stuff. SO, instead of following the traditional model: 1) go to college 2) get a degree that gets you a job 3) get a job 4) begin building wealth 5) are you bored? too bad! you are going to stay at that company and make money that buys stuff for the next 30 yrs!!!! brwaaa ha hahahaa!

...instead the post materialist goes to college because they are intrigued, get a degree in the subject that intrigued them the most, then they end up working short stints at many places and quiting to travel/work on personal projects/do stuff. They don't get bored, they might tend to be slightly nomadic, hippie-ish, etc.

the Post Materialist is a new trend!

  • Slightly nomadic, hippie-ish, etc. This seems against the rules, and I like it.

  • yes! we are a generation of people that (for the most part) seek experiences rather than wealth/security. I think it's a very cool trend.

  • but is it still equally as selfish?

  • no! how is this selfish? it's about giving up the pursuit of building wealth! How is that selfish?

It's a shift of focus. I believe you are equating it with hedonism?

  • Spending for experiences over material posessions may seem less selfish than the wealth/success paradigm, but in the absense of a purpose it's still a self-centered pursuit.

At some point, simply rejecting the old materialistic norm is not enough. There must be a meaning -- otherwise it's not better, it's just different (change for the sake of change, the mantra of irresponsibility).

If only there were some sort of objective foundational text upon which to draw guidance...
